Enroll in Medicare Part A and Part B. These premiums are automatically deducted from your Social Security check. Many choose this option assuming all is well. However, after a hospitalization event, the reality hits home that the majority of the cost falls in the Part B column and the individual is saddled with the Part A deductible ($1,632 per 60-day benefit period) and 20% of the Part B expenses (potentially thousands). All prescription costs are also on the individual and a looming possible future penalty for not enrolling in a prescription drug plan is also in play. This option does, however, eliminate future penalties for avoiding Part B premiums.
