OPTION 2 — ENROLL IN MEDICARE PART A ONLY, (THE FREE PART, UNLESS YOUR INCOME HISTORY EXCEEDS THE THRESHOLD)

Many enroll in Medicare Part A only ($0 premium for most, up to $506.00 for high earners) and avoid enrolling in Medicare Part B which carries a premium of $174.70 - $560.50 based on income history.  These premiums are automatically deducted from your Social Security check.  However, Part A, (after a $1,632 deductible per 60-day benefit period), only covers the cost of a hospital room with basic care, meals and TV.  All other expenses, with no Part B coverage for your medical mis-haps, come out of your pocket.  All prescription costs are on you and looming possible future penalties for not enrolling in either Part B or drug plan Part D are in play.

Avoiding the Part B premium ($174.70 for most - $560.50 for high earners) for 10 or 20 years seems smart, however you might give it all back and then some in one hospital stay, provided the savings are deposited into an account , otherwise the expenses will come from your kids’ inheritance!  Or even worse, the financial hit can destroy your standard of living.
